Printing in Landscape Mode
Computer Basic

Printers can print pages in portrait mode or in landscape mode. Portrait mode prints pages that are 8.5" wide and 11" tall. Landscape mode is 11" wide and 8.5" tall (the page is turned on its side).

Portrait mode is most commonly used. Letters and web pages are almost always longer than they are wide. But there are times when you want to print a table, spreadsheet, or a sign that is wider than it is tall. For that you need landscape mode.

By default, printers print in portrait mode. But, it's easy to change. Most programs have a Page Setup option in the File Menu. Use this option to change modes.

Page setup in different programs may look different, but most have a tab or a choice that looks like the image shown here.

  • Change the paper size using the drop down arrow or by entering in the width and height of your paper.
  • Change the orientation using the radio buttons labeled Portrait or Landscape.

If your program doesn't have a Page Setup option, you can still change it. When you are ready to print, choose Print from the File Menu. (Do not click the print icon on the toolbar.) The Print dialog box displays the name of the printer in a white bar near the top. After the printer's name is a button called Properties. Click that button and look through the tabs available for your printer. (Every printer is different.) Find a set of radio buttons (that look similar to those above) and choose the landscape option.
